Winter is such a magnificent look on Utah. Fresh coats of snow, shaggy firs and spruces, and my all time favorite winter shrub: the Red Twig Dogwood!
Cornus sericeae is a Utah and Rocky Mountain native. Thriving along streams and riverbanks. As such, they absolutely thrive in our local landscapes.
Mixing yellow, orange, and red twig varieties makes for an absolute knockout of a winter show!
In addition to the lovely winter interest the red or yellow twigs bring, summer’s white blooms are gorgeous! The honeybees love them too!
The “Ivory Halo” variety is a local favorite for its beautiful variegated foliage. These work well in small quantities so the unique leaves don’t get lost in a mass planting.
With fall color like this, its no wonder these are so beloved. Truly, the dogwood is an all season player.

A favorite placement for these plants is as a structural planting. Filling in places towards the fence, creating a lovely backdrop for the centerpiece plants. Depending on the variety, they can be anywhere from 1.5′ tall up to 8-10” tall’! With the right variety and placement, they can elevate just about any landscape!
